From Overwhelmed to Aligned: My Journey to Purpose and Authenticity
Find balance and fulfillment with The Holistic Itinerary's holistic approach to well-being.
I’ve always been someone who asks deep, existential questions—questions that can be difficult to answer and sometimes even a little scary. For me, these inquiries have always served as the starting point for discovering my true self.
I understand that the daunting part for many of us is the fear that the answers might demand change. However, I’ve come to view these questions as both anchors and compasses: anchors that ground me when life feels chaotic, and compasses that guide me when I need direction. They help me align with my true, authentic self.
Without those answers, though, I felt lost. It was like wandering through life without a map. This sense of emptiness made me realize how crucial self-compassion is. Developing self-compassion allowed me to validate my feelings and let them exist without judgment. While I had never avoided my emotions, I also didn’t truly understand them. Realizing that emptiness was a logical response to my situation was transformative. If you're feeling lost, remember: self-compassion isn’t just a kind gesture; it’s a profound act of healing.
Living without a compass or anchors is difficult. It’s not impossible, but let's be honest—life becomes easier when you truly know yourself and what you want. Without that clarity, you're bound to encounter obstacles. And here’s the thing: those bumps aren't failures; they're opportunities to grow, reflect, and learn. Adopting a Stoic perspective helped me recognize that it’s not the challenges themselves that matter, but how we choose to confront them.
That shift in mindset marked a pivotal turning point for me. When I felt stuck or overwhelmed, I started asking myself: How can I view this challenge as an opportunity for growth? Suddenly, those cliché phrases about letting things flow or stopping resistance began to make sense. They transformed from mere words into moments of clarity, akin to a light switching on inside. Have you ever experienced something like that? Those enlightening moments when confusion suddenly dissipates? That’s how it felt for me—like uncovering answers I had been seeking all along.
Long before achieving that clarity, I faced much harder questions—questions that made me realize I didn’t know my purpose. I had no idea what truly moved my soul and heart. These weren’t small, passing thoughts; they were profound inquiries like:
Why am I here? What is my purpose? What is the meaning of my life?
Let me tell you, those questions weren’t just hard for me—they were challenging for the people around me too. They didn’t understand why I needed to ask them. Honestly, I wasn’t trying to frighten anyone; these questions appeared uninvited, and I didn’t have answers for them. This lack of clarity left me feeling profoundly sad and disconnected from something essential.
I didn’t want to burden anyone else, but I couldn’t ignore the questions either. They served as a constant reminder of how lost I felt. As unsettling as they were, they became the catalyst for me to explore who I truly was and what I wanted from life.
For me, the journey to alignment was not smooth. It felt like walking through fog with a blindfold on, completely directionless. I was on autopilot—going to work, maintaining relationships, and trying to stay in shape. That’s what life is supposed to look like, right? Yet, even in those moments, I felt disconnected. What else was I supposed to do? Sure, I tried to enjoy the little things in life, but often those moments felt hollow.
Maybe that lack of connection with myself made it hard to connect with others, or perhaps it was just a coincidence. Either way, my life felt empty. In the places where people typically find fulfillment—like parties, dinners, or spending time with friends—there was just this void. Yet that void gave me the space to ask the hard questions.
When I began asking myself, "Who are you?" my first response was always, "I’m an architect." That answer unsettled me deeply. How could the first thing I used to define myself be my career? Who was I beyond my job title? It felt embarrassing to realize I didn’t have an answer.
So there I was, unsure of who I was without societal labels. But hey, at least I knew I was lost, right? Isn’t acknowledging that the first step? That's when my journey to purpose truly began. Little did I know, it would turn into an adventure—a messy, beautiful one—out on the open sea. No anchors, no compass, just me.
Lost, but not hopeless…
The core moment of my desperation led me to one undeniable truth: you attract the experiences you need to grow. Whether you call it destiny, fate, or just how life works, I am convinced of this. Sometimes life nudges you gently, and other times it’s a harsh wake-up call. But either way, life steers you toward growth.
With that in mind, I knew I needed to make some changes. After four and a half years, I left my job and ended an eight-year relationship. I took bold steps forward, even though there were no guarantees that they would lead to something better. To be honest, they didn’t—at least not immediately. I didn’t find a better job or a better partner, but I found myself. Those decisions marked the beginning of the hardest two years of my life, but resilience paid off in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
In my next post, I’ll share the pivotal moments that helped me realize I was allowing others to define my value.
